About the GWU NPPA Student Chapter

Having a student chapter of the National Press Photographer Association means having a group of individuals who are dedicated to visual journalism. In total there are eleven chapters. Each was created with the intent to connect students with an interest in a profession visual journalism. To be recognized by the NPPA the members have to be part of the NPPA national group. The NPPA requires a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and faculty advisor, which makes up the five member requirements. Matt Eich is the George Washington University Photojournalism Advisor and the faculty advisor of the GWU NPPA student chapter.

Elements of a chapter include having a weekly blog where students can post work and receive feedback about photographs, video productions and zines. The organization also brings in guest speakers who have experience with visual journalism and are current members of NPPA. Since there are also other chapters, the GWU student chapter will connect with them as well. Part of the organization that is specifically connected to GWU is holding events that non-members can attend. The hope of the organization is to connect all GWU undergraduate, graduate, Corcoran and SMPA students who have a passion of visual storytelling.

The overall purpose of this GWU organization is to bring validation and create an organized group of students that are interested in visual journalism. The national organization provides assistance with any recognized chapter, holding the same goal as our own student chapter, which is to create the same opportunities for students that professionals have.
